The problem with Facebook advertising is that it does not in practice earn them much money. They have a large amount of information that they can target on. The problem is that visitors to Facebook do not come with the intention of seeking out commerce.

Search advertising is an order of magnitude more profitable than other forms of internet advertising, because people are explicitly seeking something out, often something commercial. Facebook is left with brand advertising (i.e. i'll put my company here to gain name recognition) and other interesting products, but in the end, the intent of their users is not to visit facebook to seek the things that are being advertised. In their current business model, Facebook can pay the bills, but won't be a money machine like search engines are.

I really enjoy working for a company that's not dependent on website advertising revenue :)
